News ItemNovember 4, 2011 - More results create more questions for suspect ISA findings

BCSFA – November 4, 2011 – Results from two more rounds of sampling are casting further questions on suspect findings of Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA) in British Columbia. Released on Wednesday, reports from the University of Bergen (Norway) and from the Prince Edward Island lab run by Dr. Fred Kibenge both show additional positives and both raise serious questions about those positive results. Despite what some activists may claim, ISA has not been confirmed in British Columbia.

BC Salmon Farmers Association – October 17, 2011 - A press release today from Simon Fraser University regarding reports that two wild Pacific salmon have tested positive for Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA) is of concern to BC's salmon farmers. Our members are actively following up with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The CFIA is reviewing the validity of these publicized but as yet unconfirmed results. The BC Salmon Farmers Association (BCSFA) has not yet been able to review the findings.

Building on this experience the company decided to investigate the feasibility of using RAS technology to grow Atlantic salmon to market in a facility located on land.

A committed group of local companies have donated a total of over $10,000 in funding and in-kind support to the Kokish River Hatchery near Port McNeill, BC. The hatchery is operated by the Port McNeill Chinook Club and is dedicated to salmon enhancement in the Kokish River.

A new inventory of research on salmon aquaculture in Canada has now been posted online and is available to the general public. The Salmon Aquaculture Database is being hosted by the Aquaculture Association of Canada, which has a mandate to disseminate scientific and technical information on aquaculture in Canada, following its development for the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA) with funding from the federal government.

Marine Harvest and three Central Island First Nations have concluded three years of discussions intending to guide the operations of salmon aquaculture in their territories. On June 24th, the We Wai Kai, We Wai Kum and K’omoks First Nations celebrated the signing of a capacity-building agreement with Marine Harvest Canada. The agreement requires environmentally sustainable practices, provides economic and investment opportunities for the First Nations.
